Most of the planted production forest is located on hill country in the north-western part of the region where there is adequate rainfall.

The main forested areas include the northern and southern side of the Wairau River, around Rai Valley, Canvastown and throughout the Marlborough Sounds.

The geographic spread of planted forests is small and the main roading network is relatively close to most forests apart from in the Marlborough Sounds.
