Development of forestry in the Wairau

Forty years ago the Wairau Valley was dominated by sheep farming. Now there are grapes, irrigated crops, dairy farming, forestry as well as high productivity sheep farming. The value of production is many times greater than could be achieved with just sheep farming.

The changes of land use has also improved the carbon footprint of the valley as the carbon stored in trees more than equals all the emissions from the all the other activities.

Forestry consultant, John MacKenzie tells how forestry was developed in the valley.
